Networking with a honeycomb pattern

In Basel’s banking district, the focus is on a new work culture. A honeycomb-shaped wooden ceiling on the roof of the Cantonal Bank reflects the trend towards relaxed networking.

Central to the nine-by-eleven-metre ceiling is a bent H made of 90-centimetre-high beams that support the different honeycomb structures.
For the main supporting structure, the engineers chose highly stressable and light-coloured ash wood with wood connectors made of steel. This connection system, called GSA-Technology, is unique and was developed by neue Holzbau AG.

During erection, the ceiling of twelve individual parts was screwed on site between the main beams (900 × 240 mm) of ash and spruce wood.
The honeycomb elements in spruce/fir are 400 millimetres high and fulfil a purely aesthetic function.
