Pedestrian Passerelle, Tunnel Kaiserstuhl

In August 2019, initial work was started on the “N8/Lungern North-Giswil South” project, which includes the expansion of the national road between the Giswil tunnel and the Lungern tunnel. In June 2020, work began on the north and south preliminary cuts, and since January 2021, driving of the exploratory tunnel has been in full swing.

From spring 2024, the routing of the Weidli and Marchgraben above the Brünigstrasse will be adjusted. Due to these hydraulic engineering measures, the “Jakobsweg” will have to be diverted via the OWi land from then until the beginning of 2028. In order to ensure safe crossing of the Brünigstrasse for construction site personnel, visitors to the construction site and later for hikers, the canton of Obwalden has decided to build the pedestrian walkway now.

During the tendering phase, scaffolding and timber constructors were invited to submit an offer. It became apparent that due to the long service life of approx. 8 years, both solutions are practically equally expensive. The smaller space requirement, a later further use of the passerelle and aesthetic reasons led to the decision in favour of the timber construction solution. The neue Holzbau AG was able to manufacture and deliver the trusses including GSA-technology.

The section of the national road between the Giswil tunnel and the Lungern tunnel is scheduled to be opened to traffic in 2029.

Many thanks to Daniel Fanger, Department of Construction and Spatial Development, for the report.
